Herons dispatch Knights, 56-34

Rock/Richboro, Pa.) led three Herons in double digits with a game-high 12 points, as William Smith College knocked off Clarkson University in a Liberty League women’s basketball contest. Thanks to a relentless defensive effort, the Herons forced 18 turnovers, and held their guests to just .255 shooting from the floor.
The Golden Knights (4-18, 1-10 Liberty) scored the contest’s opening basketball to take their only lead of the night. William Smith (13-6, 8-2) responded with a 12-2 run to take control. Clarkson managed just five first half field goals and trailed 24-16 at the break.
After the intermission, the Herons promptly pushed their lead into double digits and maintained at least a 10-point lead over the final 16 minutes.
Young counted three trifectas among her four field goals made, matching a season-high. First-year guard Marisa Vespa (Immaculate Heart/Watertown, N.Y.) came up a single assist shy of her second career double-double, finishing the night with 10 points, nine assists, and six steals. First-year forward Stephanie Czajkowski (Bishop Ludden/Syracuse, N.Y.) added 10 points, while junior forward Tanya Richvalsky (Mohawk/Mohawk, N.Y.) chipped in six points, a team-high seven rebounds, and four blocked shots.
Sophomore forward Mickala Henson (Waverly/Waverly, N.Y.) was the lone Knight to reach double digits with 11 points off the bench.
The Herons return to action at 2 p.m., on Feb. 12, when they host St. Lawrence University. The Saints fell to 12-8 (8-3) with a 69-55 loss at Hamilton tonight.
